LITTLE LISTS // II

With all the time I spend on the internet, I find a lot of stuff that I think is cool.  So here's some cool stuff.

I loved Randi's (of Sailing over a Cardboard Sea) Twin Peaks Style Study.  I love Twin Peaks, and I love really looking at the costume design of "period" movies and television.  Also, Audrey's eyebrows are my eyebrow goals forever.

A Clothes Horse did a really cool list of Six Vintage Women Photographers You Should Know.  I recognized one or two, but this was a really neat introduction.  I love vintage photography; I really feel like modern photography has lost something that it had in the past.

I was linked to an amazing blog called Queering Makeup, which is all about the relationship between beauty and non-normative presentation.

Speaking of makeup, if you like watching people apply makeup while dropping some pretty amazing views on non-heteronormative sexuality and gender presentation, check out Jeffree Starr's Get Ready With Me with Alyssa Edwards.

Silvia from I Want To Be A Fool is basically everything I want to be in a blogger.  Her photography is gorgeous and I always love reading her entries.  Her recent one about Sicily left me speechless.

An Illustrated Guide to the Kon-Mari Method really helped me figure out what Marie Kondo was talking about in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

I've been watching Weezy Waiter's videos for at least six years now, and recently I've been clicking a bit more often as I move away from my youtubers and let's players.  This video made me really think, and I can't wait for this next series.  Good thing he uploads daily!

Last but not least, I've absolutely been loving Panic! at the Disco's new album, Death of a Bachelor.  I've also been re-visiting my beloved My Chemical Romance.  Two albums of note are Danger Days: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and, of course, The Black Parade.

I SUPPOSE THIS COULD BE A GRADUATION PHOTO SHOOT

I've graduated!!

It's kind of nuts.  I'm currently sitting at Brian's home in not Buffalo and watching him play Half-Life 2 as I edited all these.  It's kind of like a mini vacation, sitting on the couch all day and just chillaxing.  We started watching Breaking Bad (finally), but I didn't realize how strange it would be to transition to a show like it!  I'm so used to the personal relationship drama of Mad Men, rather than, you know, killing people.  I've found it kind of difficult to continue with the show since it's kind of gory.  We'll see, I suppose!

After the graduation ceremony, Lucas, Brian, and I walked back to my apartment while my parents drove.  I had Lucas take a "wizard" photo of me right outside the CFA, so I thought we should continue the shoot on the rock.  And then the photos continued.

Compared to the "professional" photos that UB got of me during the ceremony, these are way better.

RAIN

Do you ever sit in the car after you've reached your destination?  I don't.  I find that as soon as I reach where I'm going, I hop right out and am on to the next thing.  Thursday evening Brian drove me back to my apartment after a (reasonably) successful fundraiser art sale in the student union.  He usually stays over for a bit thursday evenings, but since it was late, he didn't this time.  We sat in the car talking, prolonging the inevitable goodbye.  As we sat, the rain built up on the windshield.  I initially noticed the reflection on our hands, but then noticed it on the dash.  And I realized I don't usually have a chance to see that sort of thing.

INSPIRATION // PHOTOGRAPHS BY RÉMI NOËL

Self-portrait, El Paso, Texas

I'm not going to lie; I didn't discover Rémi Noël's work by some stroke of artistic luck.  I first saw his photographs while browsing through tumblr and they didn't even have a caption or a link back!  However, as soon as I got past how cool these "traveling batman" photos were, I realized that the photos were sophisticated and compositionally beautiful.

While his Batman photos are the most interesting, in my opinion, his other photos are also gorgeous and contain lovely elements as well.  I've included my favorites below.

Photography is definitely not my favorite art form.  I'm constantly skeptical of the medium and what it has become.  Of course, take this with a grain of salt: I primarily draw.  Photography has never been my calling, since I can much more easily use another medium to get my ideas across.  Being so picky with my photography likes, though, makes my love of Rémi Noël's photographs much more important.  I love the contrast and the fact he uses natural light or found lighting paired with long exposure times to create atmosphere in his work.

What I find most interesting is that he is French, finding beauty in the sparse Western-American landscape.  Being from the United States myself, these sorts of landscapes seem to be just another part of the country.  Seeing these sights through the eyes of a foreigner is an eye-opening experience.  Self reflection is always important, whether it applies to your internal being, or the space you surround yourself with.

He says of the theme of traveling in his work,
"I need to go abroad. In France, the scenery looks all too familiar, it doesn't inspire me. I work almost exclusively in the United States because it's not that different from France: it's a modern, Western country – the ingredients are almost the same, but there's always an added hint of exoticism. I travel to the US once a year, on my own, stay ten days and take pictures. Apart from then, I don't walk around with a camera."
He claims on his website bio that he has difficulty speaking about his work, and has published an interview with a friend where he spoke about his process and work as a whole.  Read that here.

Check out Rémi on his website or shop.
