CALIFORNIA // WHAT I WORE

I have to say, I was pretty dang proud of my mini travel wardrobe for my California trip at the end of September.  I was going to write a whole post about what I packed, but it wasn't really jiving.  The way I was writing it and the way the photos were taken just didn't seem very interesting to me, and now it's kind of too late to post about it in that way!

I was really pleased that everything I brought fit in my carry on duffel and a big purse (that broke on the return trip).  I was satisfied with my outfits the entire time, which was such a nice feeling.  And I was there for 6 days!  I just wore each shirt twice and also borrowed a black shirt my mom brought because it was so nice (and it got to the point where I had wished I had brought just one more shirt).

What did I bring?

Grey Crop Top // H&M
Black & White Striped Top // H&M
Button-Down Fish Shirt // Target
Red & White Striped Top // Zara
Black Cropped Cardigan // The Woman Within
Pleather Jacket // 579
Black Circle Skirt // Heart of Haute
Red Dress // Le Bomb Shop
Disco Pants // American Apparel

Red T-Strap Heels // Kelly & Katie (DSW)
Electric Blue Chuck Taylors // Converse
Gladiator Sandals // Michael Antonio (DSW)

I want to go back so badly!  Maybe one day, with Brian.  San Francisco was so lovely, and I only saw about 5% of it.  The trip is such a fond memory now.  I had such an absolutely amazing time.  I've never been on a better trip in my entire life.

I SUPPOSE THIS COULD BE A GRADUATION PHOTO SHOOT

I've graduated!!

It's kind of nuts.  I'm currently sitting at Brian's home in not Buffalo and watching him play Half-Life 2 as I edited all these.  It's kind of like a mini vacation, sitting on the couch all day and just chillaxing.  We started watching Breaking Bad (finally), but I didn't realize how strange it would be to transition to a show like it!  I'm so used to the personal relationship drama of Mad Men, rather than, you know, killing people.  I've found it kind of difficult to continue with the show since it's kind of gory.  We'll see, I suppose!

After the graduation ceremony, Lucas, Brian, and I walked back to my apartment while my parents drove.  I had Lucas take a "wizard" photo of me right outside the CFA, so I thought we should continue the shoot on the rock.  And then the photos continued.

Compared to the "professional" photos that UB got of me during the ceremony, these are way better.

OUTLAW PRINTMAKERS // THE DIRTY DOZEN PRINT SHOW

Last thursday the Extended Print class and myself took a mini road trip to Rochester for the Dirty Dozen print show.  Jeff drove us all in a giant van there and back, because he rocks.

The show was super great and I'm really glad we got to go.  All the artist are current printmakers, trying to make a living off their art.  Seeing current printers is great, since printmaking examples are usually people like Goya and Dürer.  It was super inspiring, even though I haven't done printmaking in a bit.  Hopefully next fall I'll get back in to making prints!  I also got some pretty sweet loot from the show (a shirt and a print, plus promo materials).  I'll be making a post about that stuff soon, since I don't think it should be lumped in a "recent purchases" post.

After the show, we all went to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, which was awesome.  I didn't bring my camera in to the restaurant, but it was so fun to just hang out with all my friends and eat delicious food.  If you go, I recommend the mac and cheese more than anything.  And the poutine.  So good

All in all, a fantastic trip.  I had such a good time!!

WEEK(ISH) IN REVIEW

Happy Sunday!

This week had a lot of ups and downs.  I had a minor freak out over my thesis and just not being able to actually start it and get working, but I had a little break, relaxed, and then began to think about it and work again.  The trick is to just start doing!  So I did.

The daffodils I bought from Wegman's also have been blooming really beautifully and have been making me happy whenever I look at them.  They went perfectly with the matcha green tea I made for myself on wednesday!  I made it with milk and a little bit of sugar, but from now on I plan on making it without either.  It's better for you that way, especially since I already have my cup of tea (+ milk & sugar) in the mornings.

Monday I played a whole bunch of Dragon Age at the boyf's house and put a turtleneck (specifically dog sized, don't worry) on his dog Hunter.  Look at that guy.  Look at his concerned old man face.  Hunter is great.

Also speaking of Hunter, we watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas on tuesday.  Yes, Hunter is named after Hunter Thompson.  His name is even on the mailbox!  The film was really great, but super hard to understand the first time you watch it, which Brian said was normally how people react.  It was filmed amazingly and I'm sure that if I ever get around to watching it again I'll appreciate it even more.  Brian knows a lot about Hunter Thompson (and his friendship with Johnny Depp) so hearing his commentary and little facts made the film even more interesting.

I also dig Ralph Steadman and have seen his work around, but I never really had a name to the style.  It was really cool to learn that he did the illustrations in the book and helped with the film.  I love when, if people are going to make a film essentially about a person who is alive, they go the extra mile to make it really, really good and artistic.

On friday I signed my lease for august and submitted my last month's rent check!  So it's really going to happen, I'm going to live on my own for the first time!  I'm actually not too worried, I just need to get a job.  The weird thing is that I can't really worry about that just yet?  I really need to focus on my thesis now, and then start thinking about getting a job, which is tough.  Everyone says not to worry, but I still have that 1% of myself that thinks I won't find anything!  As long as I apply to a whole bunch of places, though, I'm sure I'll be able to find something.

Also on friday myself and SVAO went to the Albright Knox as a little club event.  On the first friday of every month, a lot of galleries and museums around buffalo open for free to the public, so we thought we'd take advantage!  I didn't have a lot of time to be there before I had to get to work so it was a little nerve-wracking, but it ended up okay in the end.

Here's to another great week!  Spring Break is coming up soon, which I can't believe.  I'm just going back home to NYC for the week to spend some time with the fam before crunch time really begins.  It's also one of my best friend's birthdays!  I need to get some presents!

A MID WINTER'S DRAW // LIVE DRAWING RALLY AT HALLWALLS

Greetings all!

Last wednesday was the Mid-Winter's Drawing Rally at Hallwalls!  For those of you who don't know, Hallwalls is a great contemporary arts center in Buffalo, promoting things such as visual art, to literature, to media!  I'd actually never had a chance to go before this, but I plan on visiting again soon.

It was such an honor to be invited to the drawing rally this year.  The Visual Arts curator, John Massier, purchased prints from the CFA's Annual Print Sale and asked Jeff, my teacher, if he had any suggestions as to people who could draw and would be a good choice for the rally.  Jeff suggested myself, my friends Teke and Mike, and the boyf.  Mike and Brian never responded so just Teke and I went, but two grads (Candy and Tommy) also were invited to join the fray.  The only other two people I knew besides them were Alicia, who graduated two years ago, and Caitlin, who was a grad one or two years ago.

The basic premise of the rally was this:  Two groups of eighteen artists draw whatever they like for forty-five minutes, using whatever medium they chose to bring with them.  At the end of each forty-five minute period, there was a silent auction for each peace for a half-hour.  Exciting!

Alicia's "Crucidicktion"

My friend Teke, performing/drawing his piece.

This is my finished piece.  I had originally done a quick sketch before the show while thinking about what I wanted to achieve and basically just did exactly what I sketched (with a couple of changes).  I didn't add the watercolor until about two minutes to the end!  Oops!

These are a couple of pieces I really dug, along with Tommy's and Teke's drawings.  Yeah art!  The painting one was super awesome, as the artist was watching a video while she was painting, and I assume, taking elements from the video.  If I could have bought one of the drawings, it would have been this one!

I wished that I hadn't been drawing so I could have seen Tommy and Teke draw, but that's how it is I suppose.  I loved seeing the polaroid and flipping through the photos Brian took of the evening.

The rally was so fun!  It was super interesting to see all the different ways people made art and to be able to watch each persons process.  I surprisingly wasn't nervous when it came to be my turn to draw (I was in the second of two groups), but the time passed so quickly I started to freak out about half way through!  That was the biggest challenge.  I honestly thought I would draw too fast!

I wasn't super happy with my finished piece, but it was definitely an experience.  Overall, loved it!  I had such a great time.  Also, someone bought my piece!  Did not expect that, but it was pretty darn cool.  Hopefully I can participate again some day.
