THESIS RED

I figured it was about time I post what I wore to my Senior Thesis show.  Being home for summer and trying to figure out what I actually want to blog about has made me come to a little standstill in terms of posting.  This summer has been really relaxing so far, lots of ups and downs, getting some sun, and just generally having a lovely time at home with my parents.  It's strange, because I feel like I'm at a turning point in my life (which I suppose I am)!  I'll be going back to Buffalo in a couple of weeks to stay with Brian, and then August first I move in to my first "real" apartment, paid for by yours truly!  Nutso.

For my Thesis show, I knew I wanted to wear a red dress.  I saw the Lady Lovesong dress on Modcloth years and years ago and it was love at first sight.  Only when I was thinking about getting something special for the show, however, did I even consider actually buying it.  I did, and it was amazing!  This dress gave me such a confidence boost and I felt like a hundred bucks!  I even pin curled my hair to go with the look.  My biggest problem now is trying to figure out other opportunities to wear the dress without feeling too fancy, which is kind of dumb.  As Oscar Wilde said, "You can never be overdressed or overeducated."

I suppose if I start dressing nicely more often than not, it'll become more regular to the people I surround myself with, and then I won't feel as uncomfortable.  One day!

I can't remember what makeup I wore other than that my lipstick was Kate Moss for Rimmel in 10.  Of course, with all my red lipsticks, I swatched them all to find the perfect match.  Blue-toned reds, yes!!

THESIS

I've been absent from writing for a while!  School is done (graduation is on Sunday!) and I've been working a lot this last week to make a couple of extra dollars before the summer.  I've been thinking a lot about what I want my blog to be, what I want my life to be, and a lot about graduating in general.  I should be writing about it soon enough.

In the meantime, here's my SENIOR THESIS.

It's been really difficult thinking about my thesis now that it's over.  I've been having a lot of thoughts and a lot of conversations about it, but not as many as I would like.  I spent a lot of time and energy and emotion on my thesis, and feel a little off kilter now that it's over and done with.  I don't think about it much anymore, but when I do, I feel a strange mix of emotion that I've never before felt about an art piece of mine.

After spending so much time on it, I wish I could talk to more people about my work.  I feel a kind of dissatisfaction, as I feel almost unable to speak with anyone about my thesis.  It's over and done with, and I feel that if I was to initiate a conversation with someone about it, I would not get the response that I would necessarily want.  I've talked a lot with Brian about it, recently, and he's helped me put my thoughts in order quite a bit.  However, since he was such a big part of the process and development of ideas, he isn't the kind of perspective I was hoping to engage for a critique.  Or a conversation of sorts.

That lack of conversation also seems to coincide with the sense of dissatisfaction I felt with the work for a while.  I felt strangely detached and disappointed in myself and the work, as if I had not just achieved something great.  The lack of feedback lead me to believe I had not achieved the goal I seemingly had set out to accomplish.  However, I still cannot pinpoint what I had subconsciously hoped to achieve with the work.  It drew an emotional response from people, and they were able to tell the story from the images and text I presented.  I suppose that detached feeling was from thinking about the work for so long, and then it suddenly and finally being finished.  Months and months of thought and deliberation ending in that show.  Then it was done.  Later that week, I took down all the pieces from the wall and now they are sitting in my drawer in the print labs.

As I drove home from critique, all those pieces were sitting in my lap.  I had a thought: "This is months and months of work, just sitting here.  If something happened, these could be gone.  And then the culmination of those months and months would not exist any longer."  It was a tad morbid, to say the least.  I don't know if I'll feel differently about it, eventually.  I honestly have no idea.

Either way, I'm extremely proud of what I've done.  My thesis is the largest body of work I've ever produced under one idea and in the time frame.  It is the largest work I have ever imagined and then executed.  It is the first step towards what I hope to do one day.  My thesis is, partially, a culmination of all my years in college and in high school.  As I edited the photos to go in the catalogue, I got a wave of pride again.  Pride in myself, for sticking with and achieving my initial goal and idea.  Pride in myself for executing the pieces, and pride that I kept my head towards the end and stopped freaking out over it all.  I knew what I was doing, and I did it.  I spent a long while stressing out about the execution, but when it finally came down to it, I was able to pull through.

Thinking back on it now as I write this... I am so, so proud of myself.

INKS

Just an update: The show is in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS (Two weeks from yesterday, YIKES).   I'm currently just trying to get things done, so here's some of the inks that I've been slowly doing.  I also finally got around to printing my other litho stone this week (not pictured).  I'm really pleased with the way everything is turning out.  I have to say I'm pretty sure my favorite is the last one, entitled "MONTHS."

SKETCHES // SENIOR THESIS

About three weeks ago, I broke out a new large sketchbook and started drawing the final designs for my thesis pieces.  Some designs are completely cemented and because of my relaxing spring break, I finally started working on the final pieces on bristol.  I'm up to five completely sketched so far.

These are the drawings in the sketchbook I did a couple of weeks ago.  Enjoy!

SENIOR THESIS RESEARCH // COMICS!

Hey everyone!

As you may or may not know, I've been working my butt off on my senior thesis project!  Up until the opening of the gallery May 3rd, the only art I'll be creating (or have time to create) will be for my thesis.

For my thesis, I'm making an illustrative narrative (which I'm sure I'll go in to more depth about soon enough) and what better than to do some comic research!  My works aren't going to be graphic novel style per-say, but it gives me a better idea of what is necessary to tell a story through imagery and symbolism.

These are the five books I got out of the library so far (I didn't even look at that many shelves, there were so many!).  With the exception of Amy Tan, who I started reading over break but never finished, the other four are absolutely stunning graphic novels.

What I checked out //
Waltz With Bashir: A Lebanon War Story by Ari Folman and David Polonsky
Vietnamerica: A Family's Journey by GB Tran
Habibi by Craig Thompson
The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan
Road to Perdition by Max Allan Collins, Illustrated by Richard Piers Rayner

These three are absolutely stunningly gorgeous graphic novels, two of which I've heard of before and had a desire to check out.  I've heard of Waltz With Bashir before and couldn't place it until I did a little google search: It's actually an animated film!  The comic is based on the style of the film.  Now I have yet another to add to my 'to watch' list.  It was a super quick read, and very emotional.  I definitely recommend it.

I've also heard of Habibi before and even was tempted to buy it a couple of years ago, just so I could.  It's a famous graphic novel and I can't wait to check it out!  The boyf is also excited about reading this one.

Vietnamerica is the one I'm currently reading, and it's really lovely.  It tells a story I would never have known, through gorgeous illustration and color.  The way that comics can tell stories in a quick and visceral way is their selling point.  The medium is completely different from any other type of storytelling.

These last two books I'm currently borrowing from the boyf and my professor.  These are more about the actual act of drawing the comics rather than studying the way others do it.  The Noir Comics book is the one I've glanced through at this point and it's really nice.  It talks a lot about composition, use of line, and lights and darks especially, in true noir style.  I've actually been debating buying that one myself since it's so interesting, and I've always been into noir style.

Understanding Comics is about every aspect of drawing and reading comics, from placement of panels, the script and type, composition, and on and on.  I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to look at that one, but I will soon enough.

I hope you enjoyed this little look in to what I've been reading recently!  I'm a big reader, but it's super hard while at school because of schoolwork, actual work, and the fact you just want to relax on your computer after a long day.  I need to start reading before bed!

RELAXING DAY IN

Hey guys!

Today was a relaxing day, full of beauty blogs, youtube, and music.  After a jam packed week with the boy, I felt like just doing absolutely nothing today.  You know how even when you're spending time with someone you love, it's always nice to have a little down time alone after?  I loved having Brian over for the week, and we did so much that I wouldn't have done if he hadn't been here, but I do love my lounge days.

I finally cracked open my sketchbook to begin work on my senior thesis sketches for the actual work.  Sadly I started this blog after I did all my planning for the actual idea, so I couldn't document during the process, but let me fill you in.

For my senior thesis, I'm illustrating an apocalypse narrative I wrote.  My whole first semester was spent writing the story, inventing the characters, and basically fleshing out the idea.  This semester is going to be for executing the prints and drawings!

I plan on doing around twenty pieces, so my plan for the break was to basically sketch out all the compositions and maybe even do some completed designs so when I got back to school I could jump right in to translating them to the actual full size pieces.  I've definitely been slacking though, so I'm going to work my butt off these next two weeks!

These sketches are for the first piece of the series, the introduction of the scene and of the main character, Max.  This piece came to me quickly when I was typing out my ideas previously (there's a word document open on my laptop) so it was pretty easy to sketch out the idea.  My other ideas, however, are not fleshing out so easily.  I can't decide if I want to do more of a comic book style lay out with panels to show different events, or if I want to do more symbolic illustrations.  There are a lot of factors to consider.

Along with that, I'm aiming to get my drivers permit this week, so I'm studying the manual and taking practice tests.  I hope to go to the DMV friday.  That's my goal!

I've been debating if I've been posting too much, or at too random of times, but I realized that it doesn't matter!  This blog is my blog, and I can post at whatever time of day and with less than twenty four hours between posts or with a week between posts!  It's a place for me to express my thoughts and myself.  I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse in to the art part of my life.  There will definitely be more coming in the future, especially once I go back to school.  I think I'll go make a cup of chai tea.
